چکیده

This paper traces the diachronic developments of C1V1reduplicative processes and their functions in some Austronesian languages. In the first half of the paper, we first examine the possible precursors of this reduplication, in particular the wide range of meanings that are associated with C1V1reduplication in Formosan languages. One of the issues that is addressed is the diachronic relationship of C1V1reduplication to the fixed vowel reduplicative pattern, C1a-, that is commonly found in both Philippine and Formosan languages and which has been reconstructed for Proto-Austronesian. I will claim that the evidence suggests that this fixed vowel reduplicative pattern developed from C1V1reduplication, and not the reverse. Various paths of semantic development are proposed which bridge the gap between iterative and other functions such as instrumental nominalization, human noun plurals and quantifiers. In the Philippines, the development of *C1V1‘human noun plural’ in some of the northern languages of Luzon has resulted in the loss of any reduplicative tie to the base, resulting in the development of unique plural morphemes. This will be discussed in the second half of the paper, utilizing the concepts of abduction and deduction to demonstrate how reduplicative processes which are structurally ambiguous have been re-interpreted and analogically spread to affect lexical items originally not in the domain of the reduplication.

Discontiguous Reduplication

McCarthy& Prince () outline a theory of reduplication in which segments in the reduplicant stand in correspondence with segments in the base. Discontiguous partial reduplication patterns, in which a string of segments in the reduplicant corresponds with a discontiguous string of segments in the base, have been observed in various languages in the Austronesian and Austroasiatic language fami...

The natural history of verb-stem reduplication in Bantu

In this study I present a comparative and historical analysis of ‘‘frequentative’’ Bantu verb-stem reduplication, many of whose variants have been described for a number of Eastern and Southern Bantu languages. While some languages have full-stem compounding, where the stem consists of the verb root plus any and all suffixes, others restrict the reduplicant to two syllables. Two questions are a...

Three Notes on Early Austronesian Morphology

INTRODUCTION.1 Many Austronesian (An) languages—particularly those of Taiwan, the Philippines, and northern portions of Borneo and Sulawesi—have elaborate systems of verb morphology. To choose just one of many possible examples, Thao, spoken by fewer than 2fteen persons around Sun-Moon Lake in central Taiwan, has over 200 pre2xes, in2xes, suf2xes, circum2xes, reduplication patterns, and the lik...

Malay as a mirror of Austronesian: Voice development and voice variation

This article examines the divergent voice systems of a selection of Malay/Indonesian varieties. I will show that the voice systems of the different Malay/Indonesian varieties largely (but not completely) reflect the voice systems in the languages in which that variety is spoken. In this way Malay/Indonesian, in its different varieties, can be seen as a mirror on the development of voice systems...

Two Perspectives on Malagasy Reduplication: Derivational and Ot Analyses∗

Malagasy is an Austronesian language with a productive reduplication morphology that applies to both roots and affixed stems. In this paper, we focus on the reduplication of a class of verbs in Malagasy. These verbs often appear with an active voice marker “an-” that triggers alternation in the root-initial consonants. The reduplication of the “an”-verbs is analyzed within two different framewo...
